So a recent study has found that a bald guy will have higher levels of a protein called Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) in their scalp when compared to men who haven’t been suffering from hair loss – up to 300% higher in fact.
What does this mean for bald or balding men? Well basically when male pattern baldness begins your hair growth cycles stop and your hair begins to miniaturize. What this means is that your hair doesn’t grow as long or as quickly as it used to and then, given enough time, it starts to become finer and shorter and eventually stops producing any noticeable hair at all. That’s when you wind up with bald or thinning patches on your scalp.
PGD2 seems to be the protein responsible for this miniaturization process and know that scientists know what protein causes your hair follicle to stop producing hair it should provide them with a pretty clear roadmap to finding an actual cure for hair loss – even for people who have been bald for years. How? Well it appears that the growth cells in each hair follicle remain alive but dormant and given the right type of protein these follicles should, in theory, simply start growing again.
Oh and this finding applies to both men and women – PGD2 is responsible for the miniaturization process in both sexes.
